Tibet Through The Red Box
Article By, Jeannie Wood CATS Executive Director
The Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) welcomes the return of Diane Fetterly as director of Tibet Through The Red Box. Diane directed CATS in The Joy Luck Club in 2000 and in The Woman Warrior in 2001. Tibet Through The Red Box is based on the Caldecott Honor Book by Peter Sis. David Heny Hwang, noted playwright for M. Butterfly, Seven Years in Tibet (sceenplay), and the recent revival of Flower Drum Song, adapted Mr. Sis' book for the stage.
Tibet Through the Red Box was originally commissioned and produced by Seattle Children's Theatre. (We are fortunate to be renting their exquisite costumes!) The story is set in the 1950's and is a recollection and fantasies of young Peter Sis on the adventures of his father in Tibet. Although it does not delve into the political situation between China and Tibet, it does serve as a basis for the beginning of a discussion. In addition to the protagonists (young Peter (played by Phillip Vossler-Thompson), his father (played by Michael Baranowski), and his mother (played by Harriet Totten), other cast members portray a cat, a fish, the Dalai Lama, yetis, lamas, and "other manifestations of nature." Tibet Through the Red Box will transport you through a land of enchantment with its culture, music and rituals. It is a play appropriate for the whole family.
