Geshe Thupten Phelgye brings his passionate compassion, frank humor, and considerable retreat experience to elucidate the method to develop bodhicitta from Shantideva’s Guide to a Bodhisattva’s Way of Life.
Geshe-la has visited the Abbey several times, but this is the first chance he’s had to accept our invitation to teach, and we are delighted to welcome him.
About Venerable Geshe Thupten Phelgye, Member of Tibetan Parliament in Exile:
Venerable Geshe Thupten Phelgye was born in 1956, had Schooling at C.S.T. Changlang and S.F.F. School Dehradun in India.He became a monk at the age of 17 having studied at Seraje Monastic University in 1973 with Venerable Abbot Dhondup Tobgyal. He received the novice ordination from the senior tutor to H.H. the Dalai Lama, Kyabje Ling Rinpoche in 1974.
In 1976, he finished the Traditional Rigchung graduation and received the Bichu ordination from H.H. the Dalai Lama in 1977. In 1979 he was appointed as a teacher at the monastic school Along with his monastic studies, he also studied medicine and became the chief health worker at the monastic health center in 1980 saving the lives of hundreds of people from tuberculosis.
He has been a tireless advocate of vegetarianism when he witnessed the cruelty of a slaughter house in 1985. In 1989 he encouraged the abbot of the monastery to stop serving meat on the temple premises, which was his first success in this mission.
In 1991 he finished the vigorous 18 years of traditional Buddhist and philosophical studies and became a Geshe. In 1992 he completed the Vajrayana studies at Gyumeh Tantric Monastery. In 1993 with blessings and guidance from H.H. the Dalai Lama on his 3rd private audience, he went to the hermitage retreat until December 1997 in the mountains of Dharamsala.
During his 4th audience with the Dalai Lama in 1998, his holiness gave his blessing to Geshe-la Phelgye to found the Universal Compassion Movement. The UCM openly campaigns for vegetarianism around the world.
In 1999 he was elected as the first President of International Gelug Society and passed a resolution on vegetarian diet in Gelug Monasteries and Nunneries. In 2000 he sponsored a resolution on vegetarian diet to all schools of Tibetan Buddhism at the National Religious Conference in Dharamsala.
In the year 2001, Geshe Phelgye was elected as a member of Tibetan Parliament in Exile to represent the Gelug tradition. In the year 2003, he brought up an historic bill in the Parliament to encourage vegetarianism in Tibetan community for compassionate living and for the long life of H.H. the Dalai Lama, which was successfully passed in the House. He was re-elected to the Parliament in 2006 for a second term.
Over the years, he has been tirelessly giving talks and teachings around the world, advocating vegetarianism and Universal Compassion for world peace.
He has been working as Tibetan Buddhist Ambassador to Sulha Peace Project in the Middle-East for the last five years and has been participating in interfaith dialogues with Jews, Muslims, and Christians, traveling to countries like India, Nepal, Thailand, Japan, Switzerland, France, Taiwan, Israel, Canada, and the United States.
He has appeared on TV, radio and in the print medias. In the United States, he has spoken at Harvard University, Wheaton College, Amherst University, Naropa University, University of San Francisco, University of California Santa Barbara, North Idaho College, UCSB Hillel College, Seton Cove Austin TX, Gonzaga Christian University,and many lineage Buddhist centers and churches.

Buddhist teacher Anam Thubten is going to give heart to heart dialogue, and invite everyone to join along in an exploration into the realm of truth which is always available to us. In this meeting, he will challenge every core belief, which has chained us to our misery for far too long.
Freedom is knocking on our door.
Information about Anam Thubten:
Anam Thubten Rinpoche was born in Tibet and entered into Buddhist training in the Vajrayana tradition at a young age. Among his teachers, he had a special affinity toward a very inspiring Dharma teacher named Lama Tsurlo, who became his main mentor. Anam Thubten was recognized as the reincarnation of Anam Lama when he was quite young. He currently serves as the main
teacher for the Dharmata Foundation based in Point Richmond, CA. He is a Buddhist scholar and writer who has published books in both Tibetan and English. His first book in English appeared under the title, No Self, No Problem.
He teaches and leads meditation retreats, and now spends most of his time in the U.S.
