Sacred Art and Ritual Implement of
THANGKA
thangka \tan-ka\ tong-ka\ n. A Tibetan word which means a rolled or fabric painting.
The Thangka is a scroll painting unique to the Tibetan culture and is created not only for aesthetic enjoyment; but also the image is used as an evocation. The painting's intention is to aid one to look within for answers to life's complexities.
Thangkas are also believed to create positive influences in their surroundings; thus, these sacred paintings are intended to be shared. Venerable Lobsang Tsultrim, originally born near Amdo, in Tibet, has been a monastic and commissioned
Thangka painting master since joining the monastery as a boy. Although he speaks beautiful English, Lobsang works with an eloquent interpreter to convey complex concepts in an Art Talk and painting demonstration on this ritual Tibetan art form. Thangkas are intended to serve as a record of, and guide for contemplative experiences. Lobsang will discuss and demonstrate the mathematical relationship within the Thangka and the Tibetan system of grid outlines. Explore the presentation and position of elements within the relationship. Discover the 62 colors, their relationships, emanations and invocations and learn the material used to obtain the brilliance in colors, and the lasting endurance in the paintings and witness a demonstration actual painting techniques.
